Today is the fiftieth anniversary of Prince Charles coming to Swansea to announce that we were to become a City. He returned on 10th December 1969 with the charter. It was good therefore to welcome him and the Duchess of Cornwall back to the City to commemorate that event.
The Royal couple arrived at around 11am to be greeted by hundreds of school children and a large number of representatives of the business community, voluntary and charity sector and civic society. They spent a huge amount of time talking to as many people as they could before we got to the main business.
As Lord Mayor, it was my job to introduce the Duchess of Cornwall to some of the local representatives, before inviting them to sign a commemorative charter, cut a cake and unveil a couple of plaques. The Prince then went onto Tabernacle Chapel in Morriston, mirroring his visit from 50 years ago, whilst the Duchess flew off to Carmarthen.
