Lord Mayor's Column 4 September 2019

More than 150 Swansea people who were celebrating 50th birthdays and wedding anniversaries, enjoyed a special garden party at the Mansion House last weekend.

It was a pleasure to share these milestone occasions with residents, as we also marked the city’s 50th anniversary.

The community celebrations for Swansea’s 50th anniversary continue this week with the Fforestfach Ladies Group at the Mansion House later today.

Friday sees the Deputy Lord Mayor attend the Annual Conference and AGM of the Boys Brigade at the Marriott Hotel in the city. The Boys Brigade were the first voluntary uniformed youth movement in the world founded in Glasgow on 4th October 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith – a whole 25 years before Baden Powell established the Scouting movement. Today they are one of the biggest Christian Youth Organisations in the UK and Ireland.

On Saturday, the Deputy Lord Mayor will stand in for me to sign the Twinning Charter between Mumbles and Havre de Grace in Maryland, USA. Representatives from the small coastal town, close to Baltimore on the East Coast of the USA, have travelled to Wales for the ceremony.

The two communities have a number of similarities - from their size and proximity to the coast, to their crafting and maritime heritage.

Twinning is a fantastic way to build bridges between communities, through personal connections and friendships, but also cultural exchanges through schools and sporting associations.

On Sunday it is time to reflect at the Merchant Navy memorial service at Technium Square memorial gardens on Langdon Road in SA1 Swansea Waterfront. Tuesday 3 September was Merchant Navy Day and the service remembers those merchant and fishing crews who lost their lives on the anniversary of the start of the Second World War.
